History

Kita-Funaoka Station opened on 1 October 1944 as Date-Funaoka Signal Station on the Ministry of Transport and Communications' Muroran Main Line, but was abolished once on 1 July 1948. It was reopened as Kita-Funaoka Signal Station on 30 September 1963, and from 3 March 1986 began handling passengers as a bureau-designated provisional stopping place. With the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 it passed to JR Hokkaido and was simultaneously upgraded to a station, becoming Kita-Funaoka Station. Its operating-kilometre distance was set on 10 March 1990, and passing (train-exchange) facilities were reinstalled on 1 March 1994. In March 2019, a station-front plaza improvement project and a new waiting room by the city of Date entered service.

Notes

The station name comes from the neighbourhood of Funaoka, which itself was named by Sendai-domain settlers from Funaoka (now Shibata) in Miyagi who moved here around 1870.
