History
Kimachi Station opened on December 25, 1929, when Japan's Ministry of Railways added a new station on the San'in Main Line between the existing Yumachi (now Tamatsukuri-onsen) and Shinji stations in Shimane Prefecture. The station handled both passenger and freight traffic at opening; freight operations ended in 1962 and parcel handling ceased in 1972, the same year staff were withdrawn. Following the 1987 privatization of Japanese National Railways, Kimachi came under West Japan Railway Company (JR West). The original station building was demolished in September 2003, a ceremony in 2009 marked 80 years since opening, and in December 2016 ICOCA support was introduced via simple IC card readers.
Notes
Kimachi sits on a brief double-track section between here and Tamatsukuri-onsen, making it a crossover point for trains on the otherwise single-track stretch.
