History
Kikyōgaoka Station opened newly on 1 October 1964 on the Kintetsu Osaka Line between Nabari and Mihata. It served as the gateway station for "Kikyōgaoka Housing Estate," Nabari's first large-scale housing development, on which construction had begun in 1963, and it was also established as a replacement for Kuramochi Station, which had stood on the Iga Line section between Nishi-Nabari and Iga-Kambe that was abolished at the same time. It was added to the stops served by express (now rapid express) trains on 21 March 1970, and became a limited-express stop on 15 March 1990. The station building was rebuilt over the tracks and a north entrance opened on 5 December 1989, with the platforms widened at the same time. Automatic ticket gates were installed in July 1990, and PiTaPa use began on 1 April 2007. It has been unstaffed all day since 1 October 2021.
Notes
The population of Kikyōgaoka Housing Estate grew rapidly during Japan's period of high economic growth, driven mainly by the baby-boomer generation; at its peak in 1995, average daily ridership reached 13,129, but as residents aged, ridership had fallen to less than half that peak by 2014.
