History

Kii-Uragami Station opened on 11 December 1936, with the opening of the JNR Kisei Naka Line between Shimosato and Kushimoto Stations. It is located at Ōaza Uragami, Nachikatsuura-chō, Higashimuro District, Wakayama Prefecture, on JR West's Kisei Main Line (Kinokuni Line). With a line renaming on 8 August 1940 it came under the Kisei West Line, and a new line to Shimosato Station was completed and opened for service on 19 July 1941. With the line renaming accompanying the opening of the Mikisato–Atashika section on 15 July 1959, it came under the Kisei Main Line. Freight handling ended in 1971 and parcel handling in 1978; the station became unstaffed on 14 March 1985 and was inherited by JR West at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. The IC card "ICOCA" became usable there on 13 March 2021.

Notes

It is a ground-level station with one island platform and two tracks, but because the exit from the station building — on the south side of the tracks — to the platform is on the opposite side of the platform, passengers must cross the tracks via a level crossing with barriers before reaching the station building, giving it a distinctive layout. The original station building from opening remains in use, with its now-shuttered ticket window and parcel counter preserved as they were.
