History
Kengunkō-mae opened on 6 May 1945 as a Kumamoto City Tram (Kengun Line) stop. Before 1964 it was renamed Kengunkō-dōri (Marist-Gakuen-mae), and reverted to Kengunkō-mae before 1969. The platforms and tracks were relocated for engineering work between November 2023 and March 2024. The name comes from Kumamoto Municipal Kengun Elementary School, about 200 metres north. The two opposing platforms toward Tōrichōsuji and Kengun-machi are slightly offset along the road and reached via an unsignalled crosswalk. It is stop number 23 on the Kengun Line.
