History
Kenchō-mae Station is an elevated monorail stop on the Chiba Urban Monorail's Line 1, in Chūō-ku, Chiba, Chiba Prefecture. It is the line's terminus (station number CM18), 3.2 km from Chiba Station at the line's other end. The station opened on 24 March 1999, and later that year was named one of the Kantō 100 best stations for its all-glass platform, designed to admit natural light. It has two side platforms facing two tracks, but only one carries scheduled trains; the other serves as a maintenance siding, and the layout leaves room for a possible future extension. Unstaffed today, it mainly serves Chiba's government district and a nearby education district that includes Chiba University's medical, pharmacy, and nursing faculties.
Notes
The station was originally planned to be built above the Yamato Bridge, but opposition from Chiba University forced a change to the planned eastward route, moving the site to its present location; commercially sold maps of the era, including some from the publisher Shobunsha, once printed the originally planned site and route.
