History
Kawarayu-Onsen Station opened as "Kawarayu Station" on 20 April 1946, as a station on the then National Railways Naganohara Line (now the JR East Agatsuma Line). Freight handling was discontinued in 1961 and parcel handling in 1984, and the station became unstaffed on 14 March 1985. It passed to JR East with the 1987 division and privatization of the national railway on 1 April, and was renamed to its present name, "Kawarayu-Onsen Station," on 1 December 1991. With the construction of the Yamba Dam, the entire Kawarayu district, including the old station, came to be included in the area scheduled for submersion, and the line was rerouted and the station relocated: service at the old station building ended on 24 September 2014, and on 1 October it resumed at a new station building at the present site, approximately 1.5 km southwest of and about 70 m higher than the old station, and the station was incorporated into the Greater Tokyo Area network on the same date. It was removed from the stopping stations of the limited express "Kusatsu" in the timetable revision of 4 March 2017, and its simplified consignment was also ended on 1 April 2021, leaving it unstaffed all day.
Notes
Because it lay within the area to be submerged by the Yamba Dam, the station was relocated in October 2014 to a site about 1.5 km southwest of, and roughly 70 m higher in elevation than, the old station; the old station building was demolished, and its site now lies beneath the surface of Lake Yamba-Agatsuma.
