History
Kawane-Ryōgoku Station opened on 30 May 1935 on what is now the Ikawa Line, then a private industrial railway. The gauge was widened from 762 mm to 1,067 mm in November 1936, with 762 mm rail retained between Senzu and Sawama as a three-rail dual-gauge section so that the Sumatagawa private tramway, later the Senzu Forest Railway, could run through. The Chūbu Electric Power private railway was transferred to the Ōigawa Railway on 1 August 1959, when the Ikawa Line was formed and passenger service began. The yard adjoining the station houses the Ikawa Line's rolling-stock depot and permanent-way office. From November 1970 a small steam shuttle ran on a parallel siding to Senzu; the operation closed on 26 November 1989.
Notes
A 2100-class locomotive operated as a tourist shuttle here between 1970 and 1989, marking the start of Ōigawa Railway's preserved steam programme.
