History
Kawabe-no-mori Station opened on 13 March 2004 as a station on the Ōmi Railway Main Line (Kotō Ōmi Route), in Tatebeshimonochō, Higashiōmi, Shiga Prefecture. It was built at the request of the former city of Yōkaichi to serve as the nearest station to "Kawabe Ikimono no Mori," an environmental education facility completed in spring 2002, and the former city bore most of the roughly 70 million yen project cost, including station-front improvements. In June 2001 the citizens' group "Yūrinkai" petitioned the city council for the station's construction; in December of the same year the "Citizens' Council for Considering an Eco-Station" was formed, and construction began in December 2003. It is an unstaffed station with a single side platform serving one track, and solar power generation equipment is fitted to the roof of the single-story station building.
Notes
Built under the slogan "Eco Station," the station reflects the philosophy of Kawabe Ikimono no Mori through features such as solar power supplying its lighting and station-front improvements that make use of recycled materials.
