History
Kawabe Station was established in Kōdenji Village, Minami-Tsugaru District, on 1 December 1894, simultaneously with the opening of the government railway's Hirosaki–Aomori section. It became a junction station on 25 September 1918 when the Mutsu Railway's Kawabe–Goshogawara section opened, and on 1 June 1927, when the Mutsu Railway was nationalized, the station became the junction of the Ōu Main Line and the Gonō Line. The Kuroishi Line was converted to the Kōnan Railway on 1 November 1984, freight handling ended on 1 November 1986, and the station passed to JR East at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. The Midori-no-Madoguchi ticket office closed on 17 March 2023, the station became unstaffed all day the next day, 18 March, and Suica became usable from 27 May. On 1 November 2024, the "Inakadate Village Kawabe Station Exchange Facility" was completed and put into service on the east side of the station.
Notes
Trains running between the Ōu Main Line toward Hirosaki and the Gonō Line (toward Goshogawara) always perform a switchback at this station, stopping for around five minutes. The property plate on the old station building was inscribed "Meiji 27, October" (October 1894), raising the possibility that, as a station building still in service, it predated Kamezaki Station.
