History

Kawabe Station opened on 21 October 1938 as Ugo-Kawabe Station on the Ministry of Railways Yashima Line in Yashima-chō, Yuri District (present-day Yurihonjō City, Akita Prefecture). Freight handling ended in 1961 and parcel handling in 1971, at which point it became unstaffed, and it was renamed to its present name, Kawabe Station, when the Yashima Line was converted to the third-sector Yuri Kōgen Railway Chōkai-Sanroku Line on 1 October 1985. It is operated as an unstaffed station with a single side platform serving one track.
