History

Kashiwagidaira Station opened on 30 July 1915 as the 762 mm-gauge terminus of the Iwate Light Railway, which aimed to connect Hanamaki and Kamaishi, in step with the extension between Kashiwagidaira and Masuzawa. It became an intermediate station when the line was extended to Iwanebashi on 23 November of the same year. It became a station on the Japanese National Railways Kamaishi Line at nationalization on 1 August 1936, and became a transfer station when the section between Hanamaki and Kashiwagidaira was converted to 1,067 mm gauge on 20 September 1943. The transfer requirement ended when gauge conversion through to Tōno was completed on 10 December 1949, and the station passed to JR East at the privatisation of the national railway on 1 April 1987. Parcel handling ended in 1962, and the station has been operated unstaffed ever since.
