History
Kase Station opened on 1 October 1986 as a stop on the Minamiaso Railway Takamori Line, a third-sector successor to the JNR Takamori Line. The 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes on 14 and 16 April caused damage to bridges and tunnel structures along the line and service was suspended through this section. The Tateno - Nakamatsu section was restored and the entire line resumed operation on 15 July 2023. The station has a single side platform with one track and a small waiting-room building; it is unstaffed.
Notes
Kase stands 5.7 km from Tateno, the starting point of the Minamiaso Railway's Takamori Line, with Chōyō on one side and Aso-Shimodajō on the other. Ridership was already sliding well before service stopped: the daily average fell from 16 passengers in fiscal 2011 to six in fiscal 2015, and the figures for fiscal 2016 and 2017 are recorded only as suspended service following the April 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes. Nearby, National Route 325 runs as two parallel roads — the bypass and the old route, now a village road, which passes about 400 m from the station and carries most of the local bus services.
