History
Kariyashi Station serves the Meitetsu Mikawa Line in Kariya, Aichi, 5.5 kilometres from Chiryū and close to the old Kariya castle town. It opened on 5 February 1914 as Kariyamachi Station on the privately owned Mikawa Railway, a company promoted by notables of Kariya town; the station was placed at the southern edge of the old castle-town district as one of the company's principal stations, and was named in contrast to Kariya Station on the Tōkaidō Main Line, which then stood among farmland. The small wooden station building of 1914 was replaced in 1931 by an imposing, modern reinforced-concrete one. After Kariya gained city status in January 1950 the station was renamed to its present form on 1 March 1952. The tracks were elevated on 14 December 1980 and a tenant building, Meitetsu Sun River, opened beneath the viaduct in December 1982. The station became unattended on 11 August 2005.
Notes
On the west side in front of the station, a 17-story redevelopment building combining condominiums and shops is under construction, scheduled for completion in fiscal 2027. Nomura Real Estate, originally announced as a joint-venture participant, has withdrawn, and the scale of the plan has also been reduced.
