History
Kareigawa Station opened as a Railway Bureau station on 15 January 1903 with the opening of the section between Kokubu (now Hayato Station) and Yokogawa (now Ōsumi-Yokogawa Station). At opening it was run by a stationmaster and six staff, and as the gateway station to Myōken Onsen it bustled with hot-spring visitors and freight. Freight handling ended on 20 September 1962, and it became unstaffed when baggage handling ended on 1 February 1984; it was inherited by Kyushu Railway Company (JR Kyushu) at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. On 2 March 2006 its original wooden main station building from opening was registered as a national Tangible Cultural Property, and it is now preserved and used under the management of its owner, the local municipality of Kirishima City.
Notes
The station building is, together with that of Ōsumi-Yokogawa Station, the oldest main station building in Kagoshima Prefecture. It is thought to have been built to the fifth-class station specification of the Ministry of Communications Railway Bureau's 1900 "Station Standards," and it was registered as a national Tangible Cultural Property in 2006.
