History

Kamoi Station opened on 25 December 1962 as a Japanese National Railways station on the Yokohama Line. With JNR's dissolution and privatisation on 1 April 1987, the station passed to JR East. Automated turnstiles arrived on 3 August 1995; a north–south free passage was completed on 31 July 1998, when provisional use of the new bridge-style station building began, and that building was finished on 25 November 1998. It replaced the original building, which stood on what is now the south side and was linked to the platform by an underpass dating from the station's opening and by a footbridge added on the Higashi-Kanagawa side as traffic grew; reaching the present north side meant going out of the building and over a footbridge on the Hachiōji side, which made the old layout inconvenient for users north of the line. Suica IC gates went live on 18 November 2001. Station numbering JH18 was introduced on 20 August 2016, and smart platform screen doors began operating on 14 October 2025.
