History

Kamikitachō Station opened on September 1, 1891 as Numazaki Station on the privately operated Nippon Railway. The line was nationalised on July 1, 1906, bringing the station into the Japanese Government Railways. It was renamed Kamikitachō on October 1, 1959. With the 1987 privatisation of Japanese National Railways, operational control passed to JR East. On December 4, 2010 — the day the Tōhoku Shinkansen was extended north to Shin-Aomori — the parallel conventional line was transferred to Aoimori Railway, and the station passed to the third-sector operator; it now stands 57.4 kilometres from Metoki along the Aoimori Railway Line and 674.7 kilometres from Tokyo Station. The station went fully unstaffed on March 18, 2023 following the closure of its ticket window the day before.

Notes

Passenger numbers at Kamikitachō rose after the transfer to Aoimori Railway: the station averaged 213 boardings a day in fiscal 2010, its last year under JR East, and 554 passengers boarding and alighting a day in fiscal 2018. In 2018 it was the tenth busiest station on the Aoimori Railway Line excluding Aomori and Hachinohe, and the busiest of the line's stations in the town of Tōhoku.
