History
Kami-Ainoura Station opened on 27 March 1920 as the Sasebo Light Railway's (later Sasebo Railway) Yamaguchi stop. The original station stood on the opposite bank of the Ainoura River; approval to upgrade it from a stop to a full station was granted on 18 January 1922, and it was renamed Kami-Ainoura Station on 1 June that year. It was transferred to the Railway Ministry with the nationalization of Sasebo Railway on 1 October 1936, and relocated to its present site on 30 August 1943 upon completion of gauge-conversion work. It became unstaffed on 1 October 1970, became a JR Kyushu Matsuura Line station at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, and was converted to the third-sector Matsuura Railway on 1 April 1988. On 15 July 1992 a passing loop was restored owing to an increase in train services.
Notes
With the completion of gauge-conversion and reconstruction work on 30 August 1943, an unusual rearrangement occurred at Ainoura Station, in which the direction of its connection to Kami-Ainoura was reversed — a rare occurrence on a main line.
