History

Kakeyama Station is a station on the East Japan Railway Company (JR East) Ishinomaki Line at Kanomata, Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture. It opened on 28 October 1912 as a station of the private Senboku Light Railway. The company was nationalized on 1 April 1919, making it a station on the Senboku Light Railway Line, and it was incorporated into the Ishinomaki Line when the line was renamed on 2 September 1922. Handling of small parcels began in 1948, but parcel handling ended on 7 June 1982, and the station became unstaffed. It passed to JR East at the privatisation of the national railway on 1 April 1987, and is now operated as an unstaffed station managed by the Kogota General Center.

Notes

The station's name comes from Mount Kakeyama (92 m in elevation) to the south. Because a landslide had caused its north side to collapse, it was called "Kakeyama" — written with characters meaning "broken mountain" — but during the Kansei era, Fujitsuka Tomoaki, a Shiogama Shrine priest and scholar of kokugaku, applied different characters, read the same way but meaning "fine-view mountain," and this new form became fixed as both the station name and the local place-name.
