History

Kajikuri-Gōdaichi Station opened on 15 March 2008 as a station within Shimonoseki city on West Japan Railway Company's (JR West) San'in Main Line. A Japanese National Railways station named Kajikuri, established on 1 October 1935 at roughly the midpoint of the same section (between Yasuoka and Ayaragi stations), had been abolished on 10 August 1941 after fuel controls during the Pacific War made it impossible to run gasoline-powered railcars. In the Heisei era, against a background of residential development as the Kawanaka area, stretching from north of Ayaragi Station to Shin-Shimonoseki Station, drew attention as a bedroom community, the station was revived as a new station about 67 years later. Its provisional name was 'Kajikuri Station,' the same as the old station, but the name eventually adopted added 'Gōdaichi,' after a place-name near the neighboring Ayaragigō ruins. The station is a ground-level halt with a single side platform serving one track, and is an unstaffed station managed by Shimonoseki Station.

Notes

The 'Gōdaichi' in the station's name derives from a place-name near the Ayaragigō ruins, a nearby Yayoi-period archaeological site; the name was changed from the provisional name 'Kajikuri Station,' used when the station's establishment was decided, before the official name was finalized.
