History

Kaiji Station opened on 1 June 1952, operated by Japanese National Railways. It was built to coincide with the assignment of KiHa 41000-series railcars to the Hitoyoshi depot and the start of their operation, and it has been unstaffed since opening. It was inherited by JR Kyushu at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, becoming a Hisatsu Line station. It has one side platform serving one track, cut into a mountain slope, has no station building, and has a waiting shelter on the platform. Located at Kaiji, Ashikita-machi, Ashikita District, Kumamoto Prefecture, it has a small settlement along the Hiratani River, which flows just southwest of the station. In March 2025, in response to JR Kyushu's policy of reviewing its station arrangements, the JR Hisatsu Line Revival Council, made up of Kumamoto Prefecture and municipalities along the line, agreed on a Hisatsu Line reconstruction plan that includes abolishing this station.

Notes

Many of the settlements that once stood along the Kuma River were forced to relocate when the area was submerged by the reservoir formed during Electric Power Development Company's construction of the Setoishi Dam between 1956 and 1958, causing the population around the station to fall sharply.
