History

Kaifu Station is Shikoku's first elevated station, opening on 1 October 1973 as a station on the Japanese National Railways' Mugi Line. At opening it was a terminus and an unstaffed station handling passengers only. It was taken over by Shikoku Railway Company (JR Shikoku) at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. The Asa Coast Railway's Asatō Line opened on 26 March 1992, and a platform was added, making it a connecting station with that line. On 1 November 2020, the section between this station and Awa-Kainan Station was transferred from the Mugi Line to the Asa Coast Railway's Asatō Line, and Kaifu Station became a station solely of the Asa Coast Railway. On 25 December 2021, in conjunction with the start of DMV (dual mode vehicle) operation, the station yard and track layout were improved, and it is now an elevated station with two opposed platforms serving one track.

Notes

The Machiuchi Tunnel, on the Asatō Line north of the station, had the hillside around it cut away by housing development, leaving only the structure standing alone; it was featured in Genpei Akasegawa's Hyperart Thomasson as a "pure tunnel."
