History

Kai-Sumiyoshi Station opened on 1 April 1931 as Kōfu-Sumiyoshi, a passenger halt on the Fuji Minobu Railway. On 1 October 1938 the Ministry of Railways (predecessor of Japanese National Railways) leased the line and simultaneously upgraded the halt to a station, renaming it Kai-Sumiyoshi. It was nationalized on 1 May 1941, becoming a station on the Ministry of Railways' Minobu Line, and passed to Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) with the division and privatization of JNR on 1 April 1987. The IC card TOICA became usable from 1 October 2025. It is a ground-level station with a single side platform serving one track; there is no station building, only a block-built waiting shelter and a small canopy on the platform, and it operates as an unstaffed station under the management of Minami-Kōfu Station.

Notes

The old rails reused as pillars in the platform waiting shelter were made by Britain's Cammell company in the 1880s, and the markings stamped on them at the time remain clearly legible.
