History
Kageno Station is a JR Shikoku Dosan Line station at Kageno, Shimanto-chō, Takaoka District, Kōchi Prefecture; its station number is K23, at an elevation of 252 m. It opened on 20 October 1947, and on 22 March 1950 an imperial train ran from this station to Kōchi Station during Emperor Shōwa's postwar tour. Delivery handling ended in 1969; on 1 October 1970 it became an unstaffed, simplified-commission station, simultaneously ending handling of hand luggage and small-lot freight and limiting parcel handling to specially designated newspapers on arrival only. It became a JR Shikoku station at the JNR privatization of 1 April 1987. In June 2010 local residents repainted the exterior walls of the station building with a view to using it as a community space.
Notes
Down trains bound for Kubokawa leave the coastline after departing neighboring Tosa-Kure and climb over 200 m in elevation over the 10.7 km to this station on a steep 25‰ gradient, one of the Dosan Line's most notable mountain-crossing sections.
