History
Kagawa Station opened on 3 December 1900 when the Sanyo Railway's line opened between Mitajiri (present-day Hōfu) and Asa stations, beginning passenger and freight handling. It came under the Sanyo Main Line following nationalization in 1906 and the 1909 line-name designation. In 1941, as part of the Tokyo–Shimonoseki 'bullet train' plan, a proposal was submitted for an elevated Shin-Kagawa Station (Shin-Ogōri Station) to be built alongside this station, but the construction was cancelled. Freight handling ended on 1 June 1963 and parcel handling ended on 1 February 1985, when the station became unstaffed. It became a JR West station at the 1987 division and privatization of Japanese National Railways, and ICOCA became usable from 1 April 2023.
Notes
The 1941 "Bullet Train" plan called for an elevated new station to be built alongside Kagawa as a stop on the Tokyo–Shimonoseki high-speed line; the construction was later cancelled.
