History
Kagaonsen Station opened on 11 October 1944 as Sakumi Station (作見駅), the wartime promotion of a signal stop established in October 1943 on the Hokuriku Main Line. When the Hakuchō limited express began running in 1961, the neighbouring Ibarihashi and Daishōji stations — backed respectively by the Katayamazu, Yamashiro and Yamanaka onsen districts — fought fiercely over which of them the express would serve; to quell the dispute the express stops were consolidated at this station, midway between the two, and on 1 October 1970 it was renamed Kagaonsen as the gateway to the surrounding hot-spring resorts. With the 1987 privatisation it became part of JR West. On 16 March 2024 the Hokuriku Shinkansen's Kanazawa–Tsuruga extension opened, adding a Shinkansen station here while the conventional line was transferred to the IR Ishikawa Railway.
Notes
Despite the name, no onsen of that name exists in the vicinity; the station serves as a transfer hub for buses to the actually-named Yamanaka, Yamashiro and Katayamazu hot-spring resorts.
