History

JR Namba Station opened on 14 May 1889 as Minatomachi ("port-town") Station, the western terminus of the Osaka Railway's first line, which ran to Kashiwara. The Kansai Railway took the line over in 1900 and the station was nationalised in 1907; the line-naming order of 1909 placed it on the Kansai Main Line, of which it is the western terminus. The site was relocated about 200 metres southwest on 28 December 1989 and renamed JR Namba on 4 September 1994, the same day Kansai International Airport opened — the first JR Group station to bear the "JR" prefix. A continuous grade-separation project moved the platforms underground on 22 March 1996. By 2031 the planned Naniwasuji Line is to extend the tracks north to Osaka Station.

Notes

JR Namba was the first JR Group station to take the company prefix into its formal name, and the first station in Japan whose official name contained Latin letters; further "JR"-prefixed station names have appeared on JR West since. The first such station outside JR West is to be JR Kaizuka, which JR Kyushu plans to open on the Kagoshima Main Line in 2027.
