History

Jōgawara Station is on the Toyama Chihō Railway Toyama-kō Line in Jōgawara 3-chōme, Toyama, with station number C33. It opened on 23 July 1924 with the Fugan Railway, equipped from the start with a depot, substation and crew room as the line's operating base. The line passed to Toyama Electric Railway on 1 December 1941 and to Toyama Chihō Railway on 1 January 1943, when that company was renamed, and it was nationalised on 1 June 1943; the Jōgawara depot continued as the Toyama-kō Line's car base, the Toyama Transport Section was set up here on 16 January 1955, and the Toyama First Locomotive Depot's Jōgawara branch survived until March 1985. The station came under JR West on 1 April 1987, was withdrawn from JR West on 1 March 2006, and reopened as a Toyama Light Rail station on 29 April 2006. A new Toyama Light Rail head office and operations control centre were built next door, together with a depot able to hold four train sets; the station returned to Toyama Chihō Railway on 22 February 2020, when Toyama Light Rail was absorbed into it.

Notes

Jōgawara was rebuilt during the 2005–2006 Toyama Light Rail project as the new operator's base: a 464 m² two-storey steel-framed head office and operations control building was completed on the adjoining site on 1 March 2006, alongside a depot able to hold four train sets, at a construction cost of 331.8 million yen. In the earlier conventional-railway era it had been the only station on the Toyama-kō Line where trains could pass.
