History
Jinba Station is one of the first stations to open in Akita Prefecture, opening on 21 June 1899 as a general-service station of the government railway, together with the neighboring Shirasawa Station. It became a station on the Ōu Main Line under the line-name designation of 12 October 1909. Before double-tracking, it served as a base for coupling banking (helper) locomotives used to cross Yatate Pass, and at its peak had more than 25 station staff assigned. Freight handling ended on 1 October 1970, and the station was relocated to its present site with double-tracking on 5 November of that year. Parcel handling ended, and the station was unstaffed, on 1 October of the following year, 1971. It became a JR East station at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, and on 1 December 2018, with Ōdate Station's move to contracted staffing, its managing station was changed to Higashi-Noshiro Station.
Notes
Traces of the old station's platform survive, and a section of the former line has been set up as a training facility for overhead-wire installation, so that stretch alone still has rails and overhead wire in place today.
