History

Iyo-Tomita Station opened on 11 February 1924 as an intermediate stop when the then Sanyo Line of Japanese Government Railways was extended westwards from Iyo-Sakurai to Imabari. Freight and parcel handling ended on 8 November 1971, after which the station became unstaffed and tickets were sold for many years under a kan'i itaku agreement by a shop in front of the station, an arrangement since discontinued. Control passed to JR Shikoku at the 1 April 1987 privatisation of Japanese National Railways. The station has two opposed side platforms, with track 1 the up/down auxiliary line and track 2 the up/down main line, limited to 100 km/h; only Yosan Line local trains stop here, and they serve only the sector between Iyo-Saijō and Matsuyama. On 31 January 2024 commemorative signage was installed to mark the centenary of the opening of the Iyo-Saijō–Imabari section of the Yosan Line.
