History

Iya Station opened on 8 November 1908 when the state-built line was extended west from Yasugi to Matsue, in present-day Matsue, Shimane Prefecture. Freight handling ended in 1983 and parcel handling in 1985. With the JNR breakup on 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR West. A bridge linking the north and south sides of the line, just east of the station, came into use on 18 April 1999. During the July 2001 San'in Line speed-up works in Shimane Prefecture the middle track was removed and the layout was reduced from two platforms and three tracks to two opposed side platforms; at the same time about 2 km of line from the platform ends towards Yonago was doubled, letting trains pass one another on the move. The station was directly staffed again from 1 July 2021 before becoming unstaffed on 2 October 2021.

Notes

The roughly 2 km of double track running from Iya towards Yonago goes back to a JNR-era doubling project: the double-bore Iya No. 1 and No. 2 tunnels near the station were brought into use as single track and the rest of the work was frozen in 1983, so the stretch only entered service as double track in July 2001, when the San'in Line speed-up works were completed.
