History

Iwaya Station is a JR Kyushu station on the Karatsu Line in Karatsu, Saga Prefecture. It opened 13 June 1899 as Motoyama, an intermediate station, when the Karatsu Kogyo Railway extended its line from Yamamoto to Kyuragi. The company, renamed Karatsu Railway, merged into the Kyushu Railway in 1902, and the station became Iwaya on 1 November 1903. The line was nationalized in 1907 and became the Karatsu Line in 1909. Freight and baggage handling ended in 1971-73, leaving the station unstaffed, and simplified ticket consignment ended in July 2019. Ownership passed to JR Kyushu with the 1 April 1987 privatization of Japanese National Railways. Today a single side platform serves the line, with a 1998-built station building named Fuusha.

Notes

The back of the station's nameboard carries an illustration of Iwaya Station by Kiyoshi Nakashima, a painter born in the local Kyuragi area.
