History
Iwashima Station is a station on the JR East Agatsuma Line in Ōaza Iwashita, Higashi-Agatsuma, Agatsuma District, Gunma Prefecture, and its name derives from the former village name, Iwashima Village. It opened as Iwashima Signal Station on 2 January 1945, and was upgraded to a freight station under the name Iwashima Station on 5 August of the same year. Passenger handling began on 20 November of the same year. Freight handling was discontinued in 1961 and parcel handling in 1971, at which point the station became unstaffed. It became a JR East station with the 1987 division and privatization of the national railway on 1 April, and the station building was rebuilt in 2002. On 1 October 2014, the line was switched to a new alignment in connection with the construction of the Yamba Dam, and the station was incorporated into the Greater Tokyo Area network on the same date.
Notes
Before the switch to the new line, the old line included the Tarusawa Tunnel (7.2 metres long), said to be the shortest railway tunnel in Japan; although it lay outside the area to be submerged after the Yamba Dam's completion, it was decommissioned when the route was switched on 24 September 2014.
