History

Iwappara-Skiing Ground Station opened on 8 December 1933 as the Iwappara-Skiing-Ground-Mae temporary halt on the Japanese Government Railways Jōetsu Line, at what is now Tsuchitaru, Yuzawa, Minamiuonuma District, Niigata Prefecture. It was closed in 1946 when the ski ground was requisitioned by the Allied occupation forces, but reopened as a temporary station on 20 December 1952. It was redesignated a provisional halt on 1 October 1969; from 10 June 1977, one round trip stopped there year-round to carry students to the nearby relocated Yuzawa branch of Muikamachi High School, and from 1 September 1981 all trains began stopping there year-round. With the division and privatization of JNR on 1 April 1987, it passed to JR East and was simultaneously upgraded to a full station, becoming the present-day Iwappara-Skiing Ground Station.

Notes

Written in 13 kana characters, its name was the longest station name on JNR/JR until the opening of Jōetsu-Kokusai-Skijō-mae Station in 1997, and it was spoken of alongside such stations as Tōkyō-Keibajō-mae and Utsunomiya-Kamotsu-Tāminaru as among the longest.
