History
Iwami Station opened on 10 June 1910 as the terminus when the government railway's San'in Main Line was extended from Tottori Station, in Iwami-chō, Iwami-gun, Tottori Prefecture. A contest to attract the station arose between Iwai village and Uratomi village, and it was decided to build the station at the midpoint between the two; the station's name, Iwami, was determined by the then prime minister, Katsura Tarō. It became a through station when the San'in Main Line was extended to Hamasaka Station on 10 November 1911. On 30 July 1945 it was bombed by U.S. carrier-based aircraft, killing three station staff, but the station building, being more than 100 meters from the blast center, escaped burning. Freight handling ended in 1975 and parcel handling in 1986, and the station passed to JR West with the division and privatization of JNR on 1 April 1987. The wooden station building, completed in November 1909, remains in use today, forming a mixed side-and-island platform layout with two platforms and three tracks, at a ground-level station where trains can pass each other.
Notes
The wooden station building, completed in 1909, was renovated ahead of an imperial visit in 1994, and has served both as the filming location for the final scene of the movie Realism no Yado and as the model for the fictional Iwatobi Station appearing in the anime Free!.
