History
Iwaki-Asakawa Station opened on 4 December 1934. Freight handling ended in October 1970, and when the Suigun Line was converted to CTC signaling in June 1983 the station became unstaffed at the same time it became a simplified-contract station, with ticket sales entrusted to a shop inside the station building. Special-handling incoming parcels (newspapers) also ceased to be handled in February 1984. The station passed to JR East at the division and privatization of JNR in April 1987. From the first train of 21 December 2014, both up and down trains were consolidated onto Platform 1 on the station-building side, and Platform 2 and the overpass were taken out of use. Reconstruction of the station building began in September 2017, and the new building came into service in February 2018. It is located at the highest elevation of any station on the Suigun Line.
