Location

History

Iwadate Station opened on 24 November 1926 as a station of the Ministry of Railways in Iwadate Village, Yamamoto District, Akita Prefecture (now Happō Town). It is the northernmost railway station in Akita Prefecture, and all seasonal rapid "Resort Shirakami" services still stop there. Freight handling ended on 1 December 1962 and parcel handling on 1 February 1984. It became a station of East Japan Railway Company (JR East) at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. It moved to contracted staffing on 1 April 2003, abolishing the post of Iwadate stationmaster and placing it under the management of the Noshiro stationmaster, and on 23 November 2010 a retro-style renewal fitted wooden lattice to the exterior walls of the station building. It was unstaffed on 1 April 2018, and has been managed by Higashi-Noshiro Station since 1 April 2020.

Notes

The wooden station building underwent a retro-style renewal in 2010, in which wooden lattice was applied to its exterior walls.
