History

Itozaki Station opened on 20 July 1892 as the terminus of the San'yō Railway when the line was extended from Onomichi; at that time it carried the name Mihara Station. When the line was extended to Hiroshima on 10 June 1894 the name was transferred to a new station closer to central Mihara and the original terminus was renamed Itozaki. Nationalisation of the San'yō Railway followed in December 1906, and the 1909 line-naming reform placed the station on the San'yō Main Line. From the station's opening until the 1970s the Itozaki locomotive depot stood on the south side of the station, and into the early 1960s Itozaki was important enough that every express and some limited-express trains called there; the station passed to JR West and JR Freight at the JNR privatisation of 1 April 1987.

Notes

Among the trains that continued to call at Itozaki even after the March 1975 extension of the San'yō Shinkansen to Hakata was the down Hayabusa sleeper, which kept its stop into the 1980s despite a 03:35 departure in the January 1980 timetable; the down Asakaze to Shimonoseki went on stopping here until 2002.
