History
Isshōchi Station opened on 1 June 1908 under the Imperial Railway Agency. It became a Hitoyoshi Main Line station the following year, 1909, then a Kagoshima Main Line station, and became a Hisatsu Line station with the line renaming of October 1927. In April 1914 the station building burned down completely, caused by a stove chimney. Freight handling ended in 1973 and baggage handling in 1984; the station became unstaffed with the introduction of electronic block signaling in November 1986, and was inherited by JR Kyushu at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April the following year, 1987. It was placed under simplified consignment in 1994 when the JA Kuma agricultural cooperative set up a branch office in the former station office, and Kuma-mura has since held the consignment, continuing to the present (with the village operating it directly from May 2025). It is located at Isshōchi, Kuma-mura, Kuma District, Kumamoto Prefecture, and retains an old wooden station building with a corridor.
Notes
Isshōchi's name carries the lucky kanji for "victory", and read together with Mayoshi Station elsewhere on the Hisatsu Line the two names make the pun isshō shiawase — "a lifetime of happiness". JR Kyushu sold a ticket between the two under that name until the product was withdrawn at the fare revision of 1 April 2025.
