History

Ishitegawa-kōen Station opened on 14 June 1972 as a station on the Iyotetsu Yokogawara Line. In 1970, a footbridge had been added alongside the railway bridge crossing the Ishite River, but access remained poor, and the station was built in response to requests from local residents. Because the embankments on both banks are steep, the station is built on the south embankment of the Ishite River. Its platform sits atop a railway bridge built in 1892, said to be the oldest railway bridge in Japan still in active use without having been relocated; in 2012, the Ishitegawa Bridge was designated a Selected Civil Engineering Heritage site by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers.

Notes

The Ishite River Bridge, which supports the station on brick abutments laid in English bond, is considered the oldest railway bridge in Japan that remains in active use at its original site, and it was recognized as a Selected Civil Engineering Heritage of Japan by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers in 2012.
