Location

History

Iriake Station opened on 15 December 1961 as an unstaffed, diesel-railcar-passenger-only station on Japanese National Railways' Dosan Line. It is located in Sachimachi, Kōchi City, Kōchi Prefecture; its station number is K01. It became a JR Shikoku station with the JNR privatization of 1 April 1987, and became an elevated station on 26 February 2008 with the completion of the Dosan Line's elevation. The distance to neighboring Enkōjiguchi Station is short, about 800 m; owing to circumstances at opening, until September 1980 only one down-direction train stopped at both stations consecutively, but now all local trains stop at both. On 3 July 2020 the nickname "Kokorozashi no Ryōma" ("Ryōma of Ambition") was given to the station, and a statue of the same name was installed.

Notes

The platform is extremely narrow, requiring caution against contact accidents, so an elevator and toilet were added some time after the line's elevation. It is a small urban station that still shows, in many details, traces of its original design for "diesel-railcar passengers only."
