History

Iragawa Station opened on 18 March 1923 with the inauguration of the Rikuu West Line section between Sanze and Atsumi (now Atsumi Onsen). It became a Uetsu Line station on 31 July 1924, and on 20 November 1925 it was incorporated into the Uetsu Main Line. The section between Atsumi and Iragawa was double-tracked on 29 September 1970. Freight and parcel handling ended on 1 September 1972, leaving the station unattended. With the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 it passed to the East Japan Railway Company (JR East). When the line was double-tracked in 1977 the alignment was shifted slightly towards the hills, and the Shin-Iragawa Tunnel, built east of the station at that time, carries the up line.

Notes

The New Iragawa Tunnel, built when the tracks were relocated to the mountain side during double-tracking in 1977, is an unusual combined rail-and-road tunnel, partitioned in half internally so that the seaward side carries the up line and the mountain side carries a roadway.
