History

Innai Station opened on 21 October 1904 as a station of the government Railway Operations Bureau in Innai-chō, Ogachi District, Akita Prefecture (present-day Yuzawa City). Freight handling ended on 1 April 1976 and parcel handling ended on 1 February 1984, and on 1 November 1986 the station became unstaffed and its operation was placed under simplified consignment. It passed to JR East at the privatisation of the national railway on 1 April 1987, and on 2 February 1988 the old wooden station building was destroyed by fire. In 1989 a combined station building in a red-brick style, incorporating the "Innai Ginzan Ijinkan" (Innai Silver Mine Foreigners' House), was completed. It was selected as one of the "100 Notable Stations of Tōhoku" in 2002, and following the de-electrification of the section in April 2025, platform track 3 within the station premises was reconfigured for turning back electric trains bound for Akita.

Notes

Innai's station building, completed in 1989, doubles as the local history museum "Innai Ginzan Ijinkan"; it is a red-brick-style Western building modelled on the house of the German engineers invited to the nearby Innai silver mine in the Meiji era.
