History

Inawashirokohan Station opened on 20 July 1986 as a seasonal halt on the Ban'etsu West Line, established by Japanese National Railways to serve summertime bathers at Shida Beach on Lake Inawashiro after a precursor stop at Shida-hama had been operated from 1962 to 1967. The original platform held three-car formations and was later extended to handle six-car trains. The station passed to JR East at the privatisation of JNR on 1 April 1987. From fiscal 2007 onward no scheduled services have called at the station, leaving it dormant though not formally abolished. In on-board announcements it was referred to as "Kohan Station" to avoid confusion with nearby Inawashiro Station.

Notes

The station is the closest on the rail network to Lake Inawashiro. It faces National Route 49, alongside which a statue known as the "Goddess of Glory" stands.
