History
Imajō Station was established in Minami-Echizen, Nanjō District, Fukui Prefecture, on 15 July 1896, when the government railway's Hokuriku Line opened between Tsuruga and Fukui. With the opening of the Hokuriku Tunnel on 10 June 1962, the old-line section running Tsuruga–Shinbo–Imajō was abolished; the Imajō locomotive depot closed at the same time, and express and limited express services ceased to call, passing through the station instead. It was taken over by JR West with the privatization and division of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, and a station-building renewal led by Minami-Echizen Town was completed in March 2017. ICOCA was introduced in 2018, and with the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen extension to Tsuruga on 16 March 2024, the parallel conventional line was transferred to Hapi Line Fukui.
Notes
Standing-and-eating soba is said to have originated within this station's premises; Takano Shōten, the station's noted ekiben (station boxed-lunch) vendor, relocated to Daishōji Station (later Kaga-Onsen Station), while Imajō Soba (Toyooka Shōten) relocated to Fukui Station.
