History
Ikawa Station opened on 1 August 1959 in Aoi Ward, Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture, on the Ōigawa Railway Ikawa Line. The line originally continued past the station on a freight branch to Dodaira, and the closure of that section on 1 April 1971 made Ikawa the line's terminus. The station sits at the highest elevation of any railway station in Shizuoka Prefecture, and has a ground-level platform beside a small station building. Service has been repeatedly interrupted by landslides on the steep final stretch of the line: the Sessokyō-onsen–Ikawa section was suspended from September 2014 to March 2017, and the Kanzō–Ikawa section from May 2018 to March 2019 and again between May and August 2022. In February 2023 the Nishiyamasawa Bridge on Track 1 was removed, leaving the station with a single platform.
Notes
The road distance between the station and Ikawa Honmura, the former village of Ikawa, is several kilometres, and a free ferry, the Akaishi-maru, runs across Lake Ikawa between the Ikawa Dam and Ikawa Honmura. Sailings are cancelled when the water level falls, and the service is suspended altogether in winter, when the level is always low.
