History
Hyōkiyama began on 11 September 1916 as the Hyōkiyama Signal Stop on the Kagoshima Main Line. It was promoted to a full station on 11 October 1920. When the Yatsushiro–Yoshimatsu–Kagoshima section of the Kagoshima Main Line was separated and renamed on 17 October 1927, the station became part of the new Hisatsu Line. Freight operations ended on 1 April 1961, baggage handling on 1 February 1984, and the station became unstaffed on 1 November 1986. It passed to JR Kyushu at the privatisation of JNR on 1 April 1987.
Notes
In fiscal 2016 the average daily number of boarding passengers was just 0.7, making it one of the least-used stations even on the Hisatsu Line, and its former wooden station building was demolished several years after the station became unstaffed.
