History

Horie Station was established on 3 April 1927, simultaneously with the opening of the Ministry of Railways' Yosan Line between Iyo-Hōjō and Matsuyama. Freight handling ended on 8 November 1971, when the station became unstaffed (placed under simplified contract operation). Until then it had had a kiosk and a relatively large waiting room for passengers transferring to the Nihori ferry route (a connecting service to Nigata Port in Kure, Hiroshima Prefecture), and had also been a stop for some express trains. The Nihori ferry route was abolished on 1 July 1982. Parcel handling ended on 1 April 1983, and in November 1984 the station building was demolished and replaced with a waiting room converted from a freight car. It became a JR Shikoku station at the 1 April 1987 division and privatization of Japanese National Railways.

Notes

The present station building is a simplified structure converted from a freight car, and it was used as the filming location for 'Iyo-Wada Station,' which appears in the Toei film 'Kigeki Dantai Ressha' ('Comedy Group Train').
