History
Hōraichō Stop (Y24) is on the Hakodate City Tram Hōrai-Yachigashira Line in Hōraichō 21-banchi (outbound) and 10-banchi (inbound), Hakodate, Hokkaidō. It opened on 17 June 1913 as Hōraichō Stop (using the alternate kanji 蓬莱町), was relocated on 15 September 1936 and at the same time became the junction with the Shinonome Line, was renamed using the present 宝来町 kanji on 1 July 1965, lost its Shinonome Line connection on 1 April 1992 when that line was abolished, and finished a long-running renovation on 30 January 2009. The two platforms face each other, set point-symmetrically about the centre of the intersection.
Notes
Until 31 March 1992 Hōraichō was the south-side junction of the now-defunct Shinonome Line (Hōraichō–Matsukaze-chō, 1.6 km), so 1-keitō trams (Komaba-shako-mae↔Hakodate-dokku-mae) ran through here. Until the January 2009 upgrade, which included barrier-free work, the outbound platform was unusually long — a vestige of the era when the tram-only signals and point operation meant the front of the platform served 2-keitō and the rear 1-keitō. A crossover was also in place, so when accidents or breakdowns caused major delays, extra services could turn back at Hōraichō.
