History
Hon-Hachinohe Station opened on 4 January 1894 as Hachinohe Station (八ノ戸駅) on a Nippon Railway branch from Shiriuchi, the present-day Hachinohe Station. Nationalisation on 1 November 1906 placed it in government hands, and a year later, on 1 November 1907, it was renamed Hachinohe Station in the modern spelling (八戸駅). Passenger service on the Hon-Hachinohe to Minato segment ended in April 1944, leaving the section freight-only. On 1 February 1971 the present name Hon-Hachinohe took effect so that the junction with the Tōhoku Main Line at Shiriuchi could inherit the Hachinohe name that April. The platform was elevated in July 1977, JR privatisation took place on 1 April 1987, and a refurbished station building reopened on 31 July 2015.
Notes
Although still listed as a JR Freight depot, the station has not seen a freight train since June 2006, when the oil trains running between the Hon-Hachinohe freight handling yard and Misawa Station, which served the U.S. military base there, ended.
